Can I work on an elevator or accessibility lift as a helper or apprentice without a license?
Only if you are in the presence of a New Hampshire licensed elevator or accessibility lift mechanic.
Do I have to take an exam to receive an elevator mechanic or inspector license?
Yes, unless you qualify under New Hampshire Administrative Rules Chapter LAB 1303.06 Examination Not Required.
How do I acquire a New Hampshire elevator or accessibility lift mechanic license?
Download the application form from our website, mail the completed application to the New Hampshire Department of Labor, PO Box 2076, Concord, NH 03302-2076 with a check for the amount of $50.00. The check must be made payable to: "Treasurer, State of NH". Be sure the check is signed, dated and write what check is for in appropriate space provided. After the application is reviewed by the department, you will be notified if any further information is needed (New Hampshire Administrative Rules Chapter LAB 1303.02 Initial License Application).
How long is the elevator inspector, elevator mechanic or accessibility lift mechanic license valid?
Two years from the date of issue (RSA 157-B:8; RSA 157-B:8-a).
What is the requirement to pass the elevator mechanic or inspector exams?
At least 70% accuracy is passing (New Hampshire Administrative Rules Chapter LAB 1303.03 Examination Required).
What do I need to study to take the elevator exam?
At this time the exam is based on the codes adopted by NH ASME A17.1 1965 Elevator Code Edition with 1967 and 1968 supplements; ASME A17.1 1984 Elevator Code Edition and ASME A17.1 1993 Elevator Code Edition with 1994 and 1995 Addendums; ASME A17.1 2010, ASME A17.1 2013, ASME A17.1 2016, A17.1 2019; ASME A18.1 2011, ASME A18.1 2014, A18.1 2017 & A18.1 2020 (RSA 157-B:3; RSA 157-B:4). How many questions are on the elevator mechanic and inspector exams and what type of questions?
There are two parts of 100 questions for each exam. The types of questions on the exams are true/false, multiple-choice, fill in the blank, short answer, and essay questions. An oral part of appropriately 5-10 questions administered by a panel is given after a passing score on the written part (New Hampshire Administrative Rules Chapter LAB 1303.05 Examination Required).
How much does it cost to renew my license?
$35.00 every 2 years (RSA 157-B:8; RSA 157-B:8-a; New Hampshire Administrative Rules Chapter LAB 1303.08 Licensing and Fees).
What do I need to study to take the Accessibility Lift Exam?
At this time, the exam is based on the code adopted by NH ASME A18.1, 2011 & 2014, Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts (RSA 157-B:3; RSA 157-B:4). A18.1 2017 & A18.1 2020
What happens if my license expires?
If not renewed within 30 days from the expiration date, you must reapply and you may not work on any related equipment alone. A $50.00 reinstatement fee is required and under certain circumstances reexamination is required (New Hampshire Administrative Rules Chapter LAB 1303.07 Renewal License; Chapter LAB 1303.08 Licensing and Fees).
How often does my elevator or accessibility lift need to be inspected?
Yearly on the anniversary date of the installation of the unit (RSA 157-B:5), by a New Hampshire licensed elevator inspector.
Who can maintain, repair and work on my elevator or accessibility lift?
A New Hampshire licensed elevator mechanic or accessibility lifts mechanics only (New Hampshire Administrative Rules Chapter LAB 1303.03 Initial License Application).
Who is responsible to have the elevator or accessibility lift inspected?
The owner or lease of the building is responsible.
When does an elevator or accessibility lift not required to have an annual inspection?
When installed in a single family private residence.
Is there a grace period to get my elevator or accessibility lift inspected?
There is no grace period, the unit must be inspected within the anniversary month.
